With only the Premier League title remaining, this has been a disappointing season by United’s standards after it started off so well.
Man Utd were eliminated from the FA Cup after losing 1-0 away at Chelsea. This was after Man Utd gave away a 2-0 lead in the first match and Chelsea managed to force a replay with the game finishing 2-2.
The game itself was disappointing and did not really live up to the hype. Many have suggested this was because it was the second match within 48 hours for both clubs, but both managers did change around their teams so whether this was an excuse is debatable.
Neither side had many decent chances until Demba Ba struck a fantastic volley after a lofted through ball from Juan Mata. In reply Petr Cech probably made the save of the season after he tipped a diving header from Javier Hernandez over the bar which was certain to go in.
On balance the game could have gone either way. Neither side dominated and the quality of the games wasn’t that good with so many misplaced passes. As a Man Utd fan I have no arguments about Chelsea winning, they took their chance so deserved to win.
The Season So Far?
Man Utd have dominated the Premier League and as of right now they are 15 points ahead of Man City with 8 games to go.
After being on top of the league for so long much of media and fans were expecting a double or even a treble by winning the Champions League as well.
Man Utd really should have progressed in the Champions League and were essentially knocked out by a poor refereeing decision. They outplayed Real Madrid in both games so it was disappointing to see them knocked out. Click here to read my post about that game.
It’s surprising that Man Utd have such poor record in the FA Cup as of late. Even though Sir Alex has won it five times, the last of which was in 2004 against Millwall. This is a shock because since then they have won 4 Premier Leagues, a Champions League and 3 League Cups.
In the FA Cup against Chelsea, Man Utd should have beat them in the first tie at Old Trafford. It was a sloppy second have performance that gave away two goals and were probably still lucky to be in the tie if it wasn’t for David De Gea.
Is There Anything Wrong?
After his blistering start Robin Van Persie’s goals have dried up, he has failed to score in any of his last 9 games for United. Wayne Rooney has also been in and out of the team through injury so scoring goals has been an issue of late.
Another problem has been the production of United’s wingers. It’s shocking to know that Valencia, Young and Nani only have 3 goals in total this season.
Valencia has been a completely different player from last season and not in a good way. Young has probably spent more time injured so he can’t really get any rhythm of games.
Then there’s Nani, who had a complete shocker against Chelsea, I have no idea what is wrong with him. He seems to have lost a first touch and keeps making a bad decision after bad decision, whether it’s a poor pass or just running into people and losing the ball. I think he will be sold in the summer with Zaha arriving.
Areas of Improvement
The midfield is the only area of weakness for United, the other areas really rely on health. As mentioned before the wingers need to step up and hopefully Zaha will improve this area or maybe shift Kagawa wide in a similar way to David Silva for Man City.
Michael Carrick has been superb this season but definitely needs help in central midfield. I think Tom Cleverly needs more time to develop but he does have what it takes to be successful at United.
I would like to see United sign either a defensive tackling midfielder or a box to box powerful runner in the mould of Yaya Toure, who can bring speed and strength to the midfield.
Has this Been a Disappointing Season?
I would say no. The ultimate goal before the season started was to win back the Premier League from their rivals City, and they look to do so comfortably.
The disappointment really comes from the Champions League as United should have got further than they actually did. With the FA Cup not so much because I think Sir Alex wants to win the Champions League more.
